Learn how your home reverse osmosis system’s filters, canisters, and connections work—and what to do if you wake up to water on the kitchen floor.
When Your RO System Leaves a Puddle on the Floor
We recently got a call from a customer — let's call her Karen — who woke up to find water on the kitchen floor again. Her reverse osmosis (RO) system lives under the sink, and she was pretty sure the leak was coming from that direction. On top of that, she’d just had hand surgery, so turning stiff little shutoff valves and wrestling with filter canisters was extra challenging.
Karen had a few specific worries you might recognize:
- The water stopped when she turned a small valve on top of the RO system… but the valve was very stiff.
- She saw three canisters (sediment and carbon filters) and wasn’t sure if they were three separate housings or one “permanently glued” unit.
- She’d ordered new filters and a replacement canister, but wasn’t sure if they would even fit what she had.
If any of that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Under-sink RO systems look more complicated than they really are, so we’ll walk you through how they’re put together and what to do when you see water on the floor.
Basic Anatomy of a Home RO System
Most under-sink RO systems are built around a few main components:
- Feed valve – A small valve that taps into your cold-water line to supply water to the RO.
- Pre-filter canisters – Usually three clear or white vertical housings for sediment and carbon filters.
- RO membrane – The “heart” of the system, usually in a horizontal tube.
- Storage tank (bladder tank) – The metal or plastic tank that stores the purified water.
- Post filter and faucet – A final polish filter and the small dedicated RO faucet on your sink.
In Karen’s case, the leak seemed to be near the first sediment canister. That’s common, because this is where water first enters the housings and where there are several threaded connections and O-rings that can wear or loosen over time.
Are Those Three RO Canisters One Piece or Separate?
Karen’s big question was whether her three vertical cylinders were permanently glued together or if they came off individually. She’d had an older RO in the past where each canister clearly unscrewed, but this newer setup looked like one block.
On most residential RO systems, those canisters are individual housings that screw onto a plastic or metal manifold:
- The top “bracket” is usually one molded piece with three threaded ports.
- Each canister (housing) screws onto that bracket with a large O-ring at the top to seal it.
- The filters inside (sediment and carbon) are separate cartridges that drop into each housing.
They may look like one solid block, especially if the housings are all the same color, but 99% of the time they unscrew individually with a filter wrench. If yours truly were a “sealed, all-in-one” system, it would usually be marketed that way and use special proprietary cartridges.
Common Places RO Leaks Start
When we show up to an RO leak like Karen’s, we usually start by checking a few hot spots:
- Canister threads and O-rings – If the housing isn’t tightened evenly, or the O-ring is twisted, cracked, or missing, water can seep out at the top edge.
- Filter canister itself – Rare, but housings can crack from age, overtightening, or freezing temperatures.
- Quick-connect fittings – Those small push-in connections for the plastic tubing can leak if the tubing isn’t cut square, fully inserted, or if the internal collet wears out.
- Shutoff valves – Tiny angle stops or inline valves (like the one Karen turned off) can get stiff or start weeping at the stem or compression nut.
Because Karen said the leak stopped when she turned off a stiff valve on top of the RO, that told us the issue was likely either that valve itself or the first canister connection right after it.
What to Do When You See Water on the Floor
If you open the cabinet and see water around your RO system, here’s a simple, safe sequence to follow:
- Turn off the RO feed valve.
Look for the small valve on the cold-water line under the sink that feeds the RO. Turn it fully clockwise to shut off water to the system.
- Close the RO tank valve.
On top of the storage tank, there’s usually a small handle-type valve. Turn it so it’s perpendicular to the tubing to close it.
- Open the RO faucet.
This releases pressure from the system. Let it drip or trickle until it stops.
- Dry everything thoroughly.
Just like Karen did, use towels and, if needed, a fan. You want the cabinet dry so you can spot any new moisture clearly.
- Check for fresh drips.
With the system still off, look for cracks in the canisters, damp fittings, or mineral tracks that show where water has been escaping.
If a valve is very stiff, or you see water around the stem or compression nut, it’s a good idea to have us replace it. A valve you can’t reliably turn off isn’t much help in an emergency.
Filter Changes, Canisters, and Leak Prevention
Karen had already ordered replacement filters and a new sediment canister, which is smart. Worn-out filters and old housings can both contribute to leaks. Here are some basic guidelines:
- Sediment filter: Usually every 6–12 months, depending on your water quality.
- Carbon pre-filters: About every 6–12 months.
- RO membrane: Typically every 2–5 years, depending on usage and water hardness.
- O-rings: Inspect every filter change; replace if flattened, cracked, or sticky.
When you change filters, a few small habits can dramatically reduce leak risks:
- Lubricate O-rings with food-grade silicone grease before reinstalling canisters. This helps them seat properly and prevents twisting.
- Hand-tighten, then snug with a filter wrench. Over-tightening can crack housings; under-tightening can cause drips.
- Wipe and check after any service. Dry the canisters and fittings, then turn the system back on and watch for 5–10 minutes to be sure everything stays dry.
Simple Maintenance Habits to Catch Problems Early
Especially for customers like Karen, who are juggling health concerns or limited hand strength, we recommend a few low-effort habits to stay ahead of leaks:
- Label your valves: A piece of tape or a small tag that says “RO Feed” and “RO Tank” makes it easy to shut things off quickly.
- Monthly moisture check: Once a month, run your hand or a dry paper towel around the base of the canisters and fittings. Any dampness means it’s time for a closer look.
- Keep a small tray under the RO: A shallow plastic tray or mat under the system can catch the first signs of a leak before it soaks the cabinet floor.
- Don’t force stiff valves: If a valve doesn’t want to turn, stop and call us. Forcing it can break the stem or create a new leak.
These small steps can save you from the “puddle surprise” Karen woke up to and help your RO system last longer.
When It’s Time to Call for Help
In Karen’s situation, she had the filters, the tank, and even an ionizer after the RO, but that first sediment cylinder connection still worried her. With stiff valves and recent hand surgery, it made sense for us to come out, inspect the system, and handle any replacements.
